Our visit to the Gower

Community Energy Wales had the pleasure of visiting three amazing projects powered by community energy in the Swansea area recently. Read all about it in this blog by Mirna, our Community Engagement Officer.

We started our visit at Cae Tân, it is a Community Supported Agriculture project (CSA) in the Gower, Swansea. After having some lovely tea and biscuits, we heard about how together, the growers aim to tackle the lack of fresh vegetables available in the area. Food security is becoming a higher priority for Wales and the wider world and projects like this are necessary to help tackle the climate crisis and help in the fight to reduce the inequality of access to nutritious food. It also touches on the energy crisis, as locally grown food needs less fossil fuel for transportation from growers to consumers.

After the lovely walk around Cae Tân, we headed to a beautiful community hub powered by renewable energy that has been working for 900 years, a reminder that renewable energy is not a new invention. Walking around Gower Heritage Centre, gave us the reaffirming sensation that we need to strive for a future where human engineering works collaboratively with nature for the community. Along with activities for the community, Gower Heritage Centre has allowed for entrepreneurs to trial their ideas, powered by renewable energy. We had the delight to eat an amazing lunch in the Gower Gourmet Kitchen, where they make fresh, homemade food using traditional recipes and using some foraged ingredients as well.

To end our day, we headed to the Eco-Farm at Killan Fach, just outside Swansea. The solar park generates enough clean electricity to power over 300 houses. Along with generating local energy, they also work with local entrepreneurs and landbase livelihoods regenerating the Swansea area.

We look forward to visiting more members of CEW and getting inspired by their amazing projects and community benefits.
